"Great generator for the money" 2009-11-08
By Steve Rogers (Loudon,Tennessee)
Very dependable generator. I use it to run two 500 watt halogen lights, and a coffee maker for early morning flea market set ups. This means hauling it in a pickup bed over sometimes bumpy roads. It has never had a hiccup. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because the gas tank lid doesn't totally seal and will leak with a full tank. Also there is a leak around the fuel gauge when the tank is full and sloshing. I will probably change gaskets and see if that solves the problem. Not a big issue but one worth noting just for the safety factor. I would recommend this generator to anyone for medium duty use.

"I got a lemon and have to eat it!" 2009-10-26
By J. Showalter (Columbus, OH United States)
I needed a generator as a back-up power supply in case of power outages at my home. I purchased a Blue Max 4000 several months ago, took it out of the box, and got it running. I was pleased with its quiet operation and it seemed to be working fine. I shut it off and put it away until I needed it a few months later. Again, it started well and worked fine--at first. But after about 15-20 minutes, it quit producing power. This is how it always works: it runs great for a few minutes and produces power perfectly, then suddenly the voltmeter goes to zero and there's no power. Since by the time I discoverd this it was too late to return it to Amazon, and I knew shipping it back would be costly anyway, I tried to see if I could figure out what was wrong with it. I figured it was a simple loose wire somewhere or something, but eventually I was told by an electric motor shop that for it to act like it does it must have a short in the generator windings, and the generator itself will need to be replaced. I'm doubtful I can find that part without paying almost the cost of a whole new unit. So I guess I'm left with a totally worthless generator. I would discourage anyone from buying this generator, since you might have the same bad experience I have had.

By K. Oleary (Detroit, MI)
This product was in good condition when it arrived. Only problem was there was no instruction book. Called Amazon and they gave me a phone number which nobody ever answers. My only solution now is to repackage the generator, not easy for a single women as it is quite heavy, and send it back to Amazon for an exchange. I am not happy about the fact that there is no way to contact the maker of the product.

 "Cheap crap" 2009-06-01
By Michael S. Willms
Bought this item through amazon from Homier distributing. It didn't work when I got it. It started up just fine, just didn't put out any power, which is kinda why I bought it! I called Homier and after you wait on the phone for about 30 min, you may get to talk to someone, or it just may hang up on you. Well finally I get someone and they want to send me parts, cause they know what the problem is. I agreed to wait on the new parts, but they didn't fix the problem. It took another 2 days of trying to get someone on the phone at Homier and now they will have someone call me back. It never happened. Don't buy this generator, and don't buy anything from Homier.

 "pretty quiet" 2009-05-16
By Tippy Tyler (Jackpot, NV)
I bought my blue max for $319 and it was delivered one day early. It was nicely packaged and came with the instruction book. I have been using the blue max for my travel trailer, it runs the air, frig, tv, or anything else in there. Starts right up (with full choke hot or cold) and runs as quiet as the camper next to me with a honda 2000. I am pleased with my purchase (cheap) but I plan on making another review after I put many more hours on it. It is pretty heavy to lift into the back of the truck, but I just leave it there and plug the 30amp cord into it. I had to buy a adapter at the RV store for the 30amp receptacle.

 "low rpm" 2009-09-19
By Harry J. Aderhold (Pueblo West, Co)
The generator was received in good condition with fast delivery. The unit started on the second pull, however the idle seemed slow. When hooked to the trailer it would not run the converter and the micro wave together. Contacted Champion and was connected with problem solver / technician Paul.He took me completely through the generator, one section at a time, checking and confirming that there was not a problem. We concluded the problem to be slow rpms. He advised me as to how to correct the problem and set the unit at the right rpm. Paul did a great job and has a good knowledge of his product.. Great little generator.

"As the 3-star description indicates, "it's OK"..." 2009-09-02
By Wildfire (Seattle, WA)
Though we don't have this exact model of generator, we picked up a very similar unit (only difference is a combo hour/volt/hertz display) from a friend a few months ago to take with "dry" camping in our trailer. In the limited time we've actually needed to run the generator, two issues have become apparent: weight and noise. Though the generator puts out ample power for our camping needs (including our trailer's A/C unit), it does so with a noise loud enough to get you kicked out of the park if run at night. Even during the day we decided to run the generator in the enclosed bed of the truck to try and muffle the sound somewhat. Then there's the weight; there's a definite reason that there's a wheel kit for this thing.. This is probably an unfair comparison as even the latest ultra-light Honda of similar capacity weighs 78 pounds, but something to keep in mind if you are looking to take this thing in and out of your vehicle (it's definitely a two person job).

Otherwise, this unit has always started on the first or second pull and has provided all the power we've needed. Just make sure to watch the oil level on the initial fill: our unit came with almost a full reservoir (made a bit of a mess on the garage floor with that one...).

 "OK so far." 2009-11-18
By Melvin J. Larsen
We had experienced an power outage a couple of years ago that lasted two days and we used the generator in our motorhome to power some of the needed appliances in our house. After selling the motor home we started looking for a emergency generator for the house. One of the things that bothered me about a portable generator was storing gasoline for long periods of time. I goes bad after a year.

When I found this propane powered generator I knew it was something we could use.

It took Amazon longer than expected to get it shipped to me, I don't think they stock them in thier warehouse. But order from manufacture. Takes longer.

After a lengthy period of attempted starts, (I think it just needed primed) it starts now on the first or second pull. It is quiet and seems to run great. I start it every 15 days and run with small load for about 10 min.

I added my own home built wheel kit as it comes without wheels and is a little hard to move around with out wheels.

It appears to be well built and well worth the price. There are not many generators out there for price of this one.

I only gave it 4 stars because I have not had a chance to use the item as designed yet.

"TRUE SINE WAVE POWER UNDER $500.00!" 2009-10-30
By A Man
As with the other reviewers my generator came with a broken Air Cleaner Assembly. I called Eastern Tool and they agreed to send out a replacement.

The unit was advertised as a Sine Wave unit with low harmonic distortion but I frankly found that doubtful at this price point. Most generators are Modfied Sine Wave which is OK for induction loads like lighting or heaters but generally terrible for electronics, microwaves and long term use with electric motors as they run hot and will often make (grinding sound) noise. We also own a large solar array with both True Sine Wave & Modified Sine Wave Converter capabilities and a Yamaha EF3000iSEB rated at 2800 watts which at $2,000.00 is a true sine wave converter.

Not owning an oscilliscope to check the Sine Wave pattern of the ETQ generator I was able to do a direct comparison with known True Sine Wave and known Modifed (clipped) Sine Wave Inverters and Generators. THIS GENERATOR IS TRUE SINE WAVE! All electronics run as they should. Motors run quietly and at normal temperatures. INCREDIBLE at this price point!

We use this generator for live outdoor concerts with a variety of sound reinforcement and instument amplifiers, True Sine Wave AC voltage is critical. Propane power is significantly safer than gasoline in an outdoor musical concert enviroment. Fire Marshalls agree!

******* TRUE SINE WAVE AC...DO NOT DISCOUNT HIS IMPORTANT DESIGN FEATURE! *******

As stated by other reviewers the generator is very quiet all things considered. The Yamaha EF3000 does make less noise 59db vs. the ETQ's 65db but the Yamaha has a fully enclosed housing to keep the noise down. This significantly adds to the the weight of the unit and also has a tendancy to make the generator vapor lock with high ambient temperatures. Not the case with the ETQ. The Eastern Tool Generator Muffler is significantly larger than any other muffler I've seen on a small gasoline engine. Clearly this aids in noise reduction.

I tested output and at an 1800 watt load, the unit was putting out 124.8 volts. A little high but I believe this is so you'll get a full 120 volts at full load. For comparision the Yamaha will put out 116 Volts at no load but drops as the load increases.

All said and done...Althought the unit does have a couple of weak design points as with the air cleaner assembly & choke lever it is a steal @ $429.00. With the knowledge that the unit is true sine wave and quiet as advertised, I would have easily paid $1,000.00 for the ETQ.

"propane over gas any day" 2009-10-29
By Ron (Bainbridge Island)
I got this because I was sick of storing gas and having to keep replacing it to keep it fresh. Even with additives the gas degrades. I was going to get a propane conversion kit but got this generator instead. I have only ran it about 3 or four hours, so I can not say much about the longevity. But I am around a small engine repair shop a lot and by far the #1 problem are carburator problems mostly due to old gas. Propane eliminates this issue. That is why the stationary home units use propane. I had no problems with anything broken on it, as the other reviews mentioned. I fill it with oil, and it fired right up.

-- Why four stars? What do you want for $400 including shipping?

--Size/ weight: I made my own wheel kit for it out of some old wheels I picked up. It is light and small enough that it could be carried with a hand truck (dolly) or by two people with relative ease. t is reasonable quite

--Noise: It is reasonably quite. it is very much quieter then old school generators that were deafening. But it is by no means as quiet as some of the super quiet Hondas. If you are 10-15 feet away it is fine.

-- capacity I used it to run a table saw and some other stuff and it handled it. I did not have enough stuff to try and stack a full load on it, but it started the tablesaw and while that was running started a old porter cable 10" hand saw.

I will update this after our next power outage.

"Propane generator needs air filter Box Modification" 2009-10-22
By Victor Waka (Brooklyn, NY United States)
Generator looks fairly well constructed. I bought this generator mainly for emergency purposes. I had a hard time starting generator(10-12 pulls). I called Eastern Tools, I was instructed to remove air box filter cover and filter, now the generator starts easily on one pull. Eastern Tools sent me a modified air box filter cover ( extra holes drilled in cover to allow more air for startup). The only other possible problem I noticed is that the choke lever seems flimsy. Propane tank seems to be a safer alternative than gasoline (less concerns over gasoline storage and staleness)

 "Great RV Generator" 2009-08-23
By Stephen Smith (AL, USA)
I purchased this generator specifically for my 30 foot camper and so far I have been pleasantly surprised by it's performance and ease of use. It easily powers my 13,500 BTU AC with room to spare utilizing the 25Amp plug although you will need an adapter. It starts easily and is relatively quite for a generator of it's size although not as quite as some of the fully enclosed generators. The sound of the AC in the camper overpowered the sound of the generator; however, it may not be quite enough for a campground setting.

Utilizing propane vs gasoline is a definite plus when it comes to storage because propane doesn't degrade like gasoline.

One thing I would definitely recommend is following the break in schedule because the engine appears to ship with a small amount of light weight preservative oil. Additionally, I installed some wheels on the unit to make it easier to roll around.

One review mentioned being shocked; however, I have never experienced any shock from the unit. Perhaps the unit that produced the shock was defective in some way. I would definitely recommend grounding the unit so the GFCI can properly function.

 "Great vlaue" 2009-11-16
By Sid R. Parsley (Huntington Beach, CA)
I was looking for a generator for emergencies and for camping. The DuroMax by PowerMax is that unit. I read the other reviews and followed their recommendations. When it was delivered, only 6 days after I placed the order, I examined the box, it was in good shape, as was the generator. The only problem I had was the yellow plastic oil dip stick had fallen out and the threads were a little missed up. I called the number on the instructions to request a new oil dip stick. Their reprehensive helped me and I had a new dip stick within 72 hours.

I then followed the easy to understand directions and the unit started the first time. The electric starter is great, no more pulling on the rope, which made my wife very happy, when she needs to start the unit. The weight is not bad. No problem lifting it into the back of my pickup truck. I just leave it there while camping.

The unit is large enough to operate the air conditioner on my camping trailer and micro wave at the same time. It is a little louder than I had hoped, but nothing you cannot live with.

 "Well worth it" 2009-09-15
By W. Everett
I bought this to power our camper while we were at the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival. They have NO hookups.I borrowed a 1500 watt last year, & it would not handle the A/C on our camper. This worked GREAT. I read one review that it arrived in bad shape. Mine arrived in perfect shape. It was well packed, with plenty of thick foam packing. It had 2 packing braces that had to be removed. Most reviews complain about being a pain putting oil in it. I simply tipped on its side & used a small funnel. After adding oil, I filled with gas, put choke on, turned the key, & it fired right up. Runs like a champ. The electric start is great.A little heavy, takes 2 people to lift it into the truck. Not as quiet as a Honda. But at half the price,it is easy to compromise. There was a 3000i Honda at the festival that hardly made any noise, but I'm sure it was over 2000 dollars.Fairly quiet. For the price & the fetchers it cant't be beat, especially when their is no tax & no shipping. Can't say anything bad, for the price.

 "Excellent product, but..." 2009-08-10
By James J. Mccormick (Paquemine, LA)
Pros: Well packed. Following instructions easy to unpack and assemble. Not quite enough power in battery to power up initially, but with the pull starter it started on the 2nd crank. Runs much quieter than other generators I have had and pulls power about as advertised. I put in a little less than a gallon of gas and have run for 1 1/2 hours and still have gas left. Compact and good looking unit. Battery needs about 1 1/2 hours of engine running to build up enough juice to start the engine after it has not been run for a few days.

Cons: When I started unpacking 1st generator discovered rust on most of the welds and where the screws attached the motor, etc. to the frame. (Paint was missing in these areas) Apparently moisture had gotten into the box. I contacted Amazon by email and within 2 hours another one was on the way. (Amazon's response was efficient and timely...and quite appreciated.) When 2nd generator arrived I found rust on welds but decided that I could remove the surface rust and repaint in about 1 hour so kept this one. I would suggest they find out where the moisture is getting into their boxes...and insure that the welds and areas where the engine is attached to the frame are painted. I realize this is cosmetic but I have never seen rust on other generators I or my friends have had, so I had to deduct a little here.

Ship time was GREAT !! Amazon Prime..

Packing was outstanding !!

Gen. Started up in seconds !!

I ran my window unit AC, Medium size and a heater. No problem in a test.

Took about a 3000 watt. load no problem. Ran for about 30 minutes.

Very quiet for price. Pull started very easy.

Electric start worked well.

The one problem I am working on is the charging time it takes for it

to charge the Batt. I seem to have a very slow trickle charge.

Charged great with Batt. charger and 12vdc jumper but slow to charge

with Gen.

I check wireing and voltage was about 14.3 vdc to batt. I can live with it. Overall it works great !! Will add if I have any problems.

Great backup for the price. Enjoy....
